Are you trying to decide when to replace the furnace in your Toms River, NJ area home? Call Heritage Air and Heat for all your heating installation needs. We can go over the different models and test your current furnace for problems and give you an honest assessment about the condition of your furnace and whether or not it’s time for a replacement. Here are some signs that could indicate that it’s time to replace an older furnace.
If your furnace has an AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating lower than 80%, it could be time for a replacement, especially if you are paying for repairs often. All furnaces manufactured today must have a minimum of 80% AFUE, but you can find models with much higher ratings. This rating measures how much fuel is converted into actual heat. If you have leaky ductwork, poor insulation, or other home energy issues, you won’t get the full value of that percentage because you could be losing heat through air leaks and a poorly-insulated attic.
There are other smaller upgrades to consider as well. Insulating and sealing is an upgrade that should be considered before a furnace replacement. You should also consider a new thermostat if you have an old mercury/dial model.
Because furnaces that were manufactured 15-20 years ago are single-stage systems, they are not as efficient. Older furnaces were designed to turn on at full capacity, and then when the desired temperature is detected by the thermostat, they shut off. When you are ready to replace your furnace look for closed combustion and multiple speed models. These models save energy because they run longer at lower speeds and automatically adjust to the thermostat to maintain a constant temperature. Closed combustion prevents energy losses through ventilation.
